2017-2018 was a Year Zero moment for Scottish Micro-Budgeted Feature Filmmaking. Through the Tartan Features collective a number of films, made on miniscule budgets finally infiltrated the mainstream by appearing on Television, Cinema and in High Street Stores…Independently.
Filmmakers involved with the collective received television commissions and even Hollywood success based on their work through Tartan Features. Other Scottish based filmmakers in that period would also find success with their own alternative industry productions. This was the Year DIY broke.

Beyond Year Zero is a snapshot celebration of what is at the forefront of this exciting movement currently taking on the mainstream industry to create an alternative route into filmmaking for all.
The 3 day event will feature 3 of the latest Tartan Features, some rarely seen previous works and the unearthing of Scotland’s original micro-budget feature from 1993, thought lost for nearly 20 years! With Q+A’s from the filmmakers, actors and technical practitioners and some of the most recent exciting shorts this event is set-out to inspire and push forward the boundaries of DIY film culture.

A whirlwind study of lives on the margins and in the footnotes of Edinburgh's recent history. Edinburgh - the overdeveloped world’s first city of the split personality, home of Jekyll and Hyde, reason, science, grave robbing, economics and heroin.
Edinburgh produces 90% of the world’s legal medical heroin and in the 1980s was the AIDS capital of Europe. This experimental and highly stylized film explores the economics of heroin and the poverty industry, and how the fragments of people’s lives connect to dramatic global events.

Blood Junkies - Scotland's original DIY feature from 1993: Scotland's ultimate cult film, lost for over 20 years is now returning from the dead.
From ‘The List’, 1994:
“Brigadoon, it certainly isn’t. There’s an evil spirit draining the blood from junkies on a run-down Scottish housing estate, a series of events tht leads a local doctor to the sleazy drug orgies held by the mysteries Sir Ruari. No kilts and fey comedies in the world of Blood Junkies “ the influences here aren’t Bill Forsyth and Sandy Mackendrick, more like Roger Corman, Fred Olen Ray and Hammer”
Writer –director Bruce Naughton and producer Keith Bradley were keen to make a straight to video that would have enough commercial edge to make some money, but would also be appreciated by friends and neighbours in Pilton and Muirhouse where the project originated”
But it all went horribly wrong as their equally lost website stated: Q: So what's the deal? I remember reading about Bloodjunkies YEARS ago in Film Threat, Total Film etc. A: Yes, Bloodjunkies was made years ago. We sold it to an American distributor Q: Lucky Huh? Big Yankee Dollars!! A: That's what we thought, BUT who we sold it to was a front for a "Religious Right" organisation who bought "Santanic Films" and then didn't release them! Q: You are joking right? A: We wish. BZ video distribuiton (American pronoucation as in Bee Zee as in Beezeelbub, geddit) based out of Omaha, Nebraska. Q: And? Well, you'll have to come along to hear the full story….

Starring Sorcha Groundsell, who recently wowed viewers of Netflix’s The Innocents and Victoria Liddelle (The Outlaw King), Far from the Apple Tree is an eclectic mix of ghost story, fairy tale and horror. Evocative of the TV series The Owl Service and films like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders and The Wicker Man with a truly magical soundtrack by Rose McDowall (Strawberry Switchblade/Psychic TV) and Shawn Pinchbeck (The Corporation).

As Hannah goes off exploring an abandoned tunnel alone, she hears someone else in the dark... or something?
Aimie Willemse is a prolific female filmmaker who explores more female centric characters and narratives through the surreal, fantastical lenses of different genres. After years writing and directing shorts across Scotland, and recently in Vancouver she plans to continue to challenging herself as she pursues a career as a director in the Scottish film/TV industry while on route to a debut, genre feature film.

A psychedelic horror that focuses on young art and design student Judith (Sorcha Groundsell from Netflix's The Innocents), who is aspiring to enter the world of art and form a name for herself in the tough industry. She attends an art gallery to see the work of her favourite artist Roberta Rosa, who takes an interest in Judith and invites her to work at her estate. Once there, things take a sinister turn. A Dark, Pop-Art Fairytale filmed on a variety of formats including 35mm, 16mm, Home Processed film and Betamax.
Far From the Apple Tree pushes the boundaries of DIY; rather than following the established rules of low budget filmmaking as a calling card it embraces its budget to create something unique and truly independent.
Olivia Gifford is one half of Scottish based production company Blue Iris Films. Her Production and Production Management credits include Outlander, Joyride and Disco.

The debut feature from auteur filmmaker, Marilyn Edmond who wrote, directed and produced this highly accomplished and beautiful looking film in true DIY fashion.
Brian (Kevin Guthrie) has lost someone close to him. Outwardly, he keeps calm, goes to work and carries on, and nobody talks about the loss. He never feels that it's possible to share his feelings, until care home owner Jeff (Stephen McCole) becomes a source of support. A flirtation with single mother Sam (Siobhan Reilly) could be a reason to choose life. Moments of optimism clash with dark despair in a strikingly filmed tale shot in North Berwick. Suicide among young men is a major issue in Scotland. Connect is an ambitious attempt to confront the issue in a heartfelt drama.

DoP Q+A – Laura Dinnett
Laura Dinnett has worked as a camera assistant in the film industry for 10 years. Her credits include such scale productions such as Under The Skin, The Railway Man, Paddington 2, Outlander and World War Z.
She concurrently works as a cinematographer on independent productions such as the fabulous looking Connect, Free Period and Yellowbird.
Laura will discuss her experiences of the camera department, how she balances it with shooting her own projects and some of the difficulties faced within the camera department.

Brian (Kevin Guthrie) is a suicidal young man who tries to take his own life and is saved by a stranger, Jeff. Jeff (Stephen McCole) encourages him to live his life, and he does and he falls in love. We see Brian live his life while battling a dark secret.
Marilyn Edmond:
"After studying a degree in Business Studies and working as an Outsourcing Consultant I decided to change careers. I begun studying TV and Film Production at Edinburgh College and shortly after I got my first job as a Floor Runner on BBC Scotland's ongoing drama River City. My career went from strength to strength, working on a mixture of TV comedy and feature films, including Sunshine on Leith, The Legend of Barney Thomson and Under the Skin. Within two years, I progressed from Runner to 2nd AD and served for years until I fell pregnant with my wee Angel Face. I have always wanted to produce and direct, and so I decided to make my first feature."

Alex Harron is a Scottish based documentary filmmaker, Bend Don’t break is first feature length film. His previous short films “Wrestling is like ballet with violence” and “Not Set Door Price” were screened on BBC 2 and BBC three respectively. His new film The Racer will be show on BBC Scotland in 2019 and has recently started filming his new documentary “The First Ever” about Kristen Fraser and her goal to become to win a world title in boxing for BBC Scotland.

What was your first time like? For Eddie (Owen Whitelaw) it's going to be the most memorable night of his life. Waking up to find himself tied to the bed of the mysterious Suze (Kelly Wenham) may have been a fantasy, but torture and being initiated into an ancient cult has now become his nightmare. A nightmare which will change the course of Eddie's life, and all those he meets. Made in under two weeks, and on a meagre budget, Darkness Comes is packed full of twists, turns, terror and darkly beautiful cinematography; all of which help to expose the myth that you need millions to make a great movie. Darkness Comes shows that talent, attitude and exciting ideas is what is really important in modern independent horror.
